Non Alcoholic White Wine

I only ever drank white wine when I had to (yeah coz people often FORCE white wine on you…geez woman!). Not because I didn’t like it, it was just always fourth in line behind bubbles, red and rosé. I can’t do a Savvy B and only like a modern clean Charddy. A Pinot Gris on a hot day with a seafood lunch? Yes please.

So now I have established all my caveats, click on the bottles below to read my reviews.

Zeitgeist Riesling 10/10

Category:

Description

I was recently told that non-alcoholic Riesling’s are the daaahhhling of the alcohol free wine world! So what better time to try this new release German wine? Google tells me that typical characteristics of a Riesling are “light body and aromas of citrus, stone fruit, white flowers, and petrol.” Petrol?? Surely that’s the ethanol???

I digress. In the glass this pours a lovely light straw yellow. On the nose there is definitely an element of stone fruit, peach and a little something tart.

To taste, you get exactly what you’d hope to. This is delicious! It’s light (but you do get a full mouth feel), tart, fruity and it flavour lingers on the tongue. It’s a really nicely balanced wine that really delivers on flavour. Far from sweet, but not too acidic. Would be beautiful with seafood of any sort (especially oysters) or a tasty cheesy platter.

As with all non-alcoholic white wines, I recommend serving this “off-fridge”, meaning let it warm up a little before you drink it. Fridge temps don’t allow these delicate flavours to open up!

Sobriety Society Non Alcoholic Chardonnay 10/10

Category:

Description

I am totally geeking out on Sobriety Society right now. I love their Blanc de Blancs and Shiraz Tempranillo and I love this non-alcoholic Chardonnay. I love that these wines are the only organic alcohol free wines in Australia. They are all incredibly low in sugar, made with careful love and attention to detail and using the best quality organic grapes.

This Chardonnay is a beautifully balanced, it’s light but not watery, on the drier side and robust enough for me. It’s nice and creamy like a good chardy, but in a modern sense. No overbearing oak here friend! There’s a nice little hint of acidity without it being overbearing. I tasted this side by side with two much lesser wines and it REALLY shone.

Even though I am not a massive white wine drinker, THIS I can definitely get behind!

Tread Softly Everything Except Pinot Grigio 9/10

Category:

Description

I am starting to feel like a bit of a broken record because I have tried quite  a few really good non alcoholic white wines just lately! But this one is definitely one to include in the shopping list!

Tread Softly have been making ‘moderate’ wine for a while now (10% ABV) so the move into a 0% was a natural progression for them. Wine maker Corey Ryan (Plus & Minus and Sobriety Society) is at it again and bringing his incredible wine making talents to the table! The Tread Softy ‘Everything Except’ range features a Rosé, a Pinot Noir, a Prosecco and this Pinot Grigio.

This Pinot Grigio is a total delight. It walks the walk and talks the talk of a full Pinot Grigio. It is light bodied, fruity, well balanced and epically refreshing and moreish. My Mum, who joined me and is a regular Pinot Grigio drinker was very much approving.

Only thing is it’s slightly thin on the length, you’re not getting much lingering in the mouth, but that’s it’s only downfall! It’s really low sugar and cals. These wines are vegan and for every 6 bottles sold, Tread Softly are planting a native tree. They have planted over 500,000 to date!

1920 Alcohol Removed Pinot Grigio 8/10

Category:

Description

White wine drinker I am not. I was very rare to jump on a white; only ever in dining out scenarios and always accompanied by seafood. But for you dear reader I will always give this a crack.

It looks like a wine, it SMELL’s like a wine and it tastes… like a wine! A beautiful Pinot Grigio without the dehydration, the headache and the spew in the taxi!

This wine is light, crisp, a good balance of sweet and dry and generally a delight.

I’m getting nashi pear, crisp apple but with a bit of an edge. A bit of chew in the mouth and a really well rounded feel. There is no chance you have mistakenly let an ice cube dissolve in this baby!

A lovely summer delight, would go so nicely with a seafood dinner or a light curry. This is low sugar & vegan friendly.

Definitely one to try.

Leitz Eins-zwei Zero Riesling 9/10

Category:

Description

I preface this review by letting you know that I wouldn’t know a Riesling if it slapped me in the face. I am by no means a white wine expert.

Luckily I opened this bottle in a room full of people who do! On first sniff my first though was, “jeez this smells legit”. I passed it to the bartender who concurred. On first taste, I was very impressed. It is robust as, there is no flavour lacking here! I get a rich, acidic, sweet (but not too sweet) vibe with a nice dry finish. This one sticks to the tongue!

Now due to the afore mentioned ignorance, I can’t vouch for the Rieslingy-ness but the 5 or so drinkers in attendance who sampled were all unified in their assessment. This legitimately tastes like a Riesling.

This wine would be beautiful paired with some seafood or a cheesy tasting platter.

Definitely a winner!

I look forward to trying more from the range including their Sparkling Rose!

Plus & Minus Pinot Grigio 7/10

Category:

Description

The bottle disappeared pretty quickly and although a little sweet, it is clean and refreshing. There is an acidity there that keep the sweet from taking over…call it balance? A lovely accompaniment to my salmon.

The grape skin extract in the Plus & Minus wines always adds a layer of complexity and body to the flavour that other AF still wines seem to miss. I would give this another go, but I am not a massive white wine drinker so won’t exactly be stocking up.

Next Destination 2018 McLaren Vale Chardonnay 10/10

Category:

Description

The Next Destination McLaren Vale Chardonnay 2018 is I think the best non alcoholic white wine on the market (big call I know!). I would call it luscious! Perfectly balanced with  a good level of acidity to balance out the richness. There are nice stone fruit flavours and a big mouth feel. Not watery or weak like some non alc whites can be!

It is so silky smooth on the palette, like liquid silk. It is super buttery with just a hint of oak.

Leave out of the fridge for 5-10 mins for an idea drinking temperature!

Next Destination are bringing a strong non alcoholic wine game, their Barossa Shiraz can’t be beaten! What will come next? Watch this space!

Two Hoots Non-Alcoholic Wine – Chenin blanc 9/10

Category:

Description

The rest of the Two Hoots range (the alcohol free Rosé and Cabernet Sauvignon) have gone down a treat.

But in my humble opinion non alcoholic white wine is the hardest to get right, so how does this fare?

In the glass it is a lovely yellow hue. On the nose it is QUITE intensely fruity, some serious stone fruit vibes here.

In the mouth it is quite simply a really nice, well balanced alcohol free white wine. It’s got good mouth feel, is pretty robust. The stone fruit carries through but it’s not uber dominant. It’s dry, full of flavour and in my humble, a real winner!

Funky Monkey Pinot Grigio 5/10

SKU: 2 Category:

Description

There’s not much to it.

I’m referring to both this review and this wine. Lack lustre grape flavoured water? That’s about as much as I can muster for this one. It’s sweet and has no reportable body or acidity. It’s not OFFENSIVLY sweet but that is mostly because its so watery. I wouldn’t be able to finish a bottle, I could barely finish a glass.

Pure Vision Zero Chardonnay 8/10

Category:

Description

There’s a new kid on the block. Pure Vision are a South Australian based winery focused on organically grown non-alcoholic wines. This is a 2021 Chardonnay from the Adelaide Plains. A little reminder to always get your non-alc white wines out of the fridge 10-15 mins before you intend to drink them. You don’t want them too chilled!

On the nose this is quite sweet and unremarkable. Perhaps a little melon. To taste I am getting a really crisp, slightly acidic finish. Quite rich and buttery like a good Chardonnay should be. A good depth of flavour and nice mouth feel here. Overall nothing to complain about here! A good, solid dealcoholised white wine!

This is vegan, organic and gluten free.

Giesen 0% New Zealand Pinot Gris 9/10

Category:

Description

White wine drinker I am not. I was very rare to jump on a white; only ever in dining out scenarios and always accompanied by seafood. In those instances for me it was always a crisp, chilled Pinot Gris. The Giesen 0% Pinot Gris is the award winning wine house’s third option in their 0% range. The world famous Sauvignon Blanc, the newly released Rosé both get the tick and tick. Giesen are doing non-alcoholic wine well.

Top notch grapes are sourced from vineyards across New Zealand (Marlborough, Waipara and Hawke’s Bay)and oh boy does it show. This is everything I want in a white wine. Crisp, beautifully balanced and delicious. I get stone fruit, a rich full mouth feel and a tart acidity that balances any sweetness. This is a beautifully crafted wine of the ‘I can’t believe it’s not butter’ calibre.

My Amy sized pour (aka very generous) has disappeared all too quickly. It’s straight back to the fridge for me!

As with all the Giesen AF wines the Pinot Gris is low cal, low sugar as clean as they come. Huzzah to guilt free drinking!

Giesen 0% Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 10/10

Category:

Description

The GOOD news is, the word on the street is right, this does taste like a legit savvy b. A slightly acidic one but a Sauvignon Blanc none the less.

The BAD news (for me at least) is that it tastes like a savvy b. I just can’t do a sav. Not sure if it was a bad experience long forgotten, but I just can’t stand the flavour. I would only drink in extreme emergencies (ie only thing left at a party when you just have to keep drinking).

I knew going into this taste test that this was the likely outcome, but I still had to try for myself, just in case it accidentally tasted less offensive.

This makes giving this one a rating hard. If I imagine that I don’t have a gag reaction to this varietal, then this might earn an 8 or 9/10. Its low sugar and low cal so it gets extra points!

But for me, no thanks. Giesen please do a Pinot Gris!

Rating: This is the best of the best of the Sav Blancs. 10/10 if you like SB.

Giesen 0% New Zealand Riesling 7/10

Category:

Description

It’s no secret that I am a fan of the Giesen Non-Alcoholic Wines. I present them regularly in my tasting events and the Merlot in particular is a crowd favourite.

The Riesling is the latest in their offering of alcohol free still wines, (when will you be making a sparkling Giesen??) a bold move when you’re up against such stiff competition as Leitz Riesling (a universally adored white option).

On the nose this has the acidic punch you would expect from a Riesling. A very citrus forward drop it would seem. In the mouth…heck. NOT what I was expecting at all. Is is waaaayyy sweeter than it smells. Waaayyy sweeter than what I was expecting and waaaaayyy sweeter than what I can drink. There are some nice flavours in there, definitely getting the ripe mandarin, but I am getting no pronounced wine profile. This is a serious nup from me unfortunately!

Plus & Minus Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 10/10

Category:

Description

I’ve decided that non-alcoholic white wine is an even tougher nut to crack than reds. Most come off too sweet and raisiny for me. Or gutless. But as with their premium Barossa Shiraz the Plus & Minus team are WINNING at WINE.

Unlike others I have tried, this wine has depth and character. It’s a smooth modern Chardonnay, not at all heavily oaky like those rotten chardy’s of the past. But it’s got body and balance. It’s smooth and creamy but with a little hint of acidity.

No mistaking this bad boy for grape juice. It’s a beautifully selected and crafted wine with the alcohol gently removed and the added bonus of Plus & Minus’ added grape skin extract for extra bite and extra antioxidants.

Even though I am not a massive white wine drinker, THIS I can definitely get behind!

Almost Zero Sauvignon Blanc 8/10

Category:

Description

Ahhh the tricky world of non-alcoholic white wine. Up until this point there has been only one contender for me for a GOOD bottle of alcohol free white, and that is Next Destination’s excellent Chardonnay.

As with all my Sauvignon Blanc reviews, I must preface this by letting you know that I was never a Savvy B fan in general. But I do know what they are supposed to taste like and will review it from that standpoint.

Almost Zero make quite good non-alcoholic wines. I am particularly partial to their red.

In the glass this wine pours quite a vivid yellow, on the nose I get no outstanding Sauvignon Blanc characteristics. I gave it a waft under Mum’s nose and she thought it was a Chardonnay!

Similarly, the Savvy characteristics are not there in the mouth. I like it! (haha). As with their red, it is dry and tart, with a slightly smokey undertone. A little on the acidic side, but it is certainly not watery or lacking in depth. So many non-alcoholic whites are sweet or thin and this is neither. Definitely worth a go!

Newblood Non-alcoholic Chardonnay 4/10

Category:

Description

My first impression here was the smell. The oak is STRONG. Like, all you can smell strong. On tasting, she’s quite acidic and crisp, definitely not raisiny. And there is the oak. Quite strong in the background. For a while it felt like I was drinking wine, but then the oaky-ness got too much and I didn’t get through the whole bottle (rare for liquid ?)

All in all not entirely unpleasant but I don’t think I’ll be rushing to buy it again. She gets bonus points for being quite low in sugar but there are too many E numbers on that label for my liking. 5/10

** UPDATE **

It’s the following day and I am still getting horror oak flavour flashbacks on my palette. Never again! Downgrading to a 4/10

Lindeman’s Alcohol Free Semillon Chardonnay 8/10

Category:

Description

Remember a day when Chardonnay used to be that really full oak overwhelming experience? So cringeworthy. Those 80’s Chardonnay’s made a really bad name for themselves. It was only really in the last 6 years or so I became aware of a thing called a “new-wave” Chardonnay, which was infinitely more pleasant to drink. I was a little worried this Lindeman’s drop would rely on that oak profile, but I needn’t have!

Such a pleasant surprise in a glass! This Semillon Chardonnay is robust and full of flavour. I don’t get that “dissolved ice cube” vibe I have had from other still white wines.

The flavour profile is fruity, acidic and not too sweet. I would bear in mind that your dedicated reviewer does have quite a high tolerance for acidic profiles, so if you’re a bit averse in that department, approach with caution.

An overall great experience, nice to find a still white with some body to it!

Odd Bird Low Intervention Organic White No.1 8/10

Category:

Description

White wine drinker I am not. I was very rare to jump on a white; only ever in dining out scenarios and always accompanied by seafood. But for you dear reader I will always give this a crack.

Odd Bird (the makers of the sensational Blanc de Blancs and Spumante wines the world’s first non-alcoholic low intervention wine made of hand harvested Garganega and Vespaiola grapes natively grown in Breganze, in the Veneto region of Italy. I had to go a little googling at this point having never heard of either varietal. What I discovered is that the Garganega has concentrated aromas of honey, candied lemon peel, tropical fruits and sweet spices. Whereas the Vespaiola is often used to produce sweet dessert wines, it can also be fermented to dryness where it usually produces a light bodied wine with high acidity.

Given this is aged 12 months you are definitely not getting the sweet dessert wine vibe (thank god!). However you definitely get a good amount of fruit, say a crisp apple with sweetness but acidity to balance. A great mouth feel, very robust and well rounded. A rich buttery finish.

I’d suggest serving it a bit off fridge temperature; straight out of the fridge and you lose some of those more delicate flavours. This one would suit you if you like a Pinot Grigio as it is quite similar but with an extra layer of richness.

I am so excited, my first virtual visit to the Napa Valley! And for a non-alcoholic wine none the less!

On the nose this is a throw-back Chardonnay. A more 90’s version, heavily oaked than a more modern clean Chardonnay. But I know that smells can be deceiving, so lets dive in!

Mmm…the smell is not so deceiving. There is definitely a strong oak hit here, which is not surprising given this wine has been aged in both French and American oak! Maybe this is a California style of thing, because in Australia I feel like we have moved on from the oak vibes. Anyway, I digress.

Moving on from the oak (can you tell I am not a fan?) everything else this wine is giving me is really good. It’s got that buttery richness you want, nice balance of acidity and a great mouth feel. Its quite luscious and crisp. You get apple and nut without it being too sweet.

If I could get past the oak this would be a winner for me!

Rating: 8/10 (with below caveat)
