Non Alcoholic Red Wine

It has taken me many months of tasting and being disappointed to realise that for some reason (I am not the expert here) there is no way of replicating the real red wine taste experience. It’s disappointing, I know, but once you come to terms with the reality of this, you can move on with your life.

The best options I have found are a nice drink, some edge close and will work in certain settings, but they will always been a very distant cousin twice removed.

Thomson & Scott Noughty Rouge Syrah 10/10

Category:

Description

Wow Wow Wow.

This is top of the range. The best quality non-alcoholic red wine on the market. Will you mistake it for alcohol? No. Will it fill that void that’s been missing since giving away the real thing? ABSOLUTELY!

Lovingly and carefully crafted in South Africa using only the best Syrah grapes. It goes through a very serious and strategic oaking process, that leaves a deliciously complex, full bodied alcohol free red wine. It is SOOO well balanced. And robust. And it’s got all the elements you know and love from a good Syrah/shiraz. There’s pepper, rich juicy fruit and tannins that leave you wanting MORE!

This is an absolute winner!

Wowsa

A bold, balsy, oaky, insanely drinkable non alcoholic Shiraz. Words I am SAH pleased to be able to type! This is allll you could want in a booze free red wine. It’s so full of flavour, a total full mouth experience. So delicious. Dark chocolate and rich berry are there but it is dry and tannic and so moreish.

I can’t wait to try the rest of the range! Off to the bath with another glass and some dark choc! Treat yo self!

This is also vegan friendly.

Tread Softly Everything Except Pinot Noir 10/10

Category:

Description

The non-alcoholic wine range from Tread Softly has so far been a hit, with a very good Pinto Grigio and an even better Rosé on offer.

We all know that the reds are hard nuts to crack, so how will this non alcoholic Pinot Noir stand up in the line-up? The good news is that it does! I tried this with my Dad, who had never tried an alcohol free red wine and he was very impressed. He’s a season Pinot drinker and loved it from the first mouthful.

There’s a great mouthfeel to this, it’s smooth and delicate but not lacking in any way. Brilliant flavours of plum give depth and there is a lovely tannic feel. This wine is far removed from the horror ribena flavoured alcohol free wines we know from the past. Developments in the category are coming thick and fast and the Tread Softy Everything Except range is testament to this. A total winner. For every six bottles purchased, Tread Lightly are planting a native tree. This wine is also vegan.

Two Hoots Non-Alc Cabernet Sauvignon 9/10

Category:

Description

So far in this range I have enjoyed the Two Hoots Rosé, it’s one of the best I have tried!

As always I recommend opening your alcohol-free red wine WELL before you intend to drink it. Hours if you can. Decant it if you can. All of this helps the wine to open up and you get a much better drinking experience.

On the nose this has a really earthy smell, rich with some berry aromas.

To taste she is rich, with cherry and plum flavours. A little sweet but not off-puttingly so. There is some oakyness there that adds character and a nice level on tannin, not too drying.

I think this wine is really nicely balanced with good depth and complex characteristics.

Altina Sansgria 10/10

Description

This is a little turn in a new direction for family business Altina. Their previous two drinks, La Vie En Rose & Light Me Up have both been botanical RTD cocktails that don’t seek to mimic alcohol and are their own standalone flavour profile.

With Sansgria they are bringing you the Altina version of a Sangria, ready to drink and in the can! This features a  dealcoholised shiraz wine with delicious Native Riberry for spice and citrus notes.

The flavours in this are DIVINE. The Riberry brings the warmth and there is delicious sweetness from the fruit, having said that, she’s still dry. Served over ice with some dried or fresh citrus and you are in faux sangria heaven! This drink also has the bonus of being seriously low sugar and available in the bottle or a single serve can…super easy for picnics or moments when you just feel like one!

This can also be used to make a mulled wine in the cooler months… see HERE for a demonstration!

Sobriety Society Shiraz Tempranillo 8/10

Category:

Description

Sobriety Society are new kids on the Alcohol Free block! They have a Chardonnay, a Blanc de Blancs and a Shiraz Tempranillo. And they are all organic and low in sugar! Red wine is my one true love, so I’ve gone with this first.

Smells jolly good, some red berry notes coming through strongly on the nose. I note that I have broken my own rules and literally cracked this and tried it. I normally recommend letting AF red wine aerate for a good amount of time before enjoying. Despite this, I do like it. As a Tempranillo would be, a little on the sweeter side. But in a balanced way. It’s not grape juice sweet. There is a nice balance of acid and tannin in there. It’s robust and you get a good mouth feel, and a lingering pleasant after taste.

It’s a little tart but not too tart and little hints of savoury notes which we know maketh the good red wine. All in all a very pleasant start to my Sobriety Society experience. Not bad…not bad at all!

Rating: 8/10 (with bonus points for being organic and low sugar)

Leitz Zero Point Five Pinot Noir 7/10

Category:

Description

I love Leitz’s Riesling. It’s a really really great, crisp, dry white non-alcoholic wine. So I cracked this bottle of their Pinot Noir with so much excitement and gusto, thinking this could be our saviour. The non-alc red wine hunt could be called off.

Don’t call off the hunt. This wine smells good, dry, aromatic, berry scented. Pours like a Pinot, light in colour and full of promise. But for me it does not deliver on flavour. At this point I thought it was me, maybe my memory of Pinot Noir is off and this is what it’s supposed to taste like: so I enlisted the help of Google. “A traditionally dry wine, it emits obvious hints of bright red fruit on the palate and through its aromas. Yet these flavours are not particularly rich and tannin elements are subtle. The lighter, velvety feel combined with a low tannic content and medium-high acid makes Pinot Noir particularly easy to drink.”

I’m getting the red fruit notes, it is dry; but for me it’s a little too on the sweet side. It’s not quire grape juice vibes, it’s more advanced than that, it’s just missing that slightly savoury element that we love about red wine.

If you love a light red, I think give this a go. I think it would work quite well chilled in summer, with some cheese & bikkies.

For mine, The Lindeman’s Cab Sav still ticks all the right boxes and is leading the way with the non-alcoholic reds.

Post review note: I popped grabbed a bottle of Plus & Minus Pinot for comparison while writing this. The P&M is the better of the two, but by adding a little drop of the P&M to the Leitz it gave it a bit more of that tannic & savoury feel I was after. Never be afraid to mix it up!

Plus & Minus Shiraz 8/10

Category:

Description

This Shiraz is GOOD. It’s not quite “I can’t believe this doesn’t have alcohol in it” level good, but it’s by far the best I have tried to date. It’s sweet but not raisny, a little on the acidic side and most importantly has that tannic mouth feel that I have been chasing! This I gather is thanks to the unique grapeskin extract (bonus antioxidants) that keeps things on the drier side. It’s all very clever!

Plus & Minus Pinot Noir 8/10

Category:

Description

I feel like this wine is the sophisticated younger sister of the Plus & Minus party girl Shiraz. Compared with the Shiraz, the pinot is more subtle, less boldly fruity.

There’s a slightly savoury edge, she’s a little peppery and beautifully tannic thanks to the grape skin extract used in the process. It’s a really tight race and I’m splitting hairs, but I actually think I prefer this over the shiraz.

It would pair beautifully with antipasto or a cheesy risotto.

Domaine de la Prade Organic Merlot/Shiraz 7/10

Category:

Description

I do remember trying this alcohol free red wine back in my very early days, way before Dry but Wet. In fact I still have my original tasting note. It was “too sweet”. Given my taste buds and knowledge have come a long way, I thought my preference for this wine may have adapted too.

Turns out it has not. I have more words, but in general the gist is the same. Though complex, rich and flavourful, with a good tannic mouth feel, this wine is a tad too sweet for my palette. Its tart and rich with good cherry flavours, but there’s just a little too much up front sugar taste for me. Great for those who can handle the sweeter side, and would hold up great in a sangria or mulled wine. It is a good quality product and organic to boot!

Dr Zenzen 0.0 Dornfelder 6/10

Category:

Description

I’ve had an epiphany. AF red wine is to red wine what zoodles are to pasta. What nutritional yeast is to Parmesan. A healthy alternative that mimics but will never quite match the original. This Dornfelder is full(ish) bodied, a little on the fruity side but a tolerable accompaniment to my salty dinner.

I wouldn’t buy it knowing there is better on the market.

Natureo Grenache Shiraz 8/10

Category:

Description

I taste tested this one head-to head with the Plus & Minus Shiraz. You don’t get the same level of tannic dry with the Natureo (as you do with Plus & Minus) but I think the flavour profile is actually a bit more complex. It’s a little warmer, softer with a bit of depth (not full red wine depth but you know, full for AF). They are on par calorie-wise, the Natureo is slightly lower carb.

The verdict is they are both good AF reds with their own good qualities, so enjoy!

Ariel Cabernet Sauvignon 7/10

Category:

Description

The Ariel Cab Sav came recommended as a tried and tested favourite. Described as “a full-bodied, oak-aged voluptuous red wine”. I have to say I was a little disappointed (and glad I took backup wine).

She’s a tiny bit dry and tannic, but not enough to win me over. She’s not overwhelmingly sweet, but still too sweet for my liking. The main thing missing to me is any body or depth of flavour. There is no robustness or richness there (as we know is generally the case with many of the non alc reds!)

She would be ok I think chilled for summer drinking, but not what I am looking for as a fireside cosy.

The most exciting thing about this one is that it has a cork! Just like in the olden days! Yes I easily amused.

Giesen 0% New Zealand Merlot 10/10

Category:

Description

New Zealand’s most famous wine house Giesen, are killing it at non-alcoholic wine. Their Sav Blanc, Rosé and Pinot Gris are all leading the way in their respective spheres.

And once again they have done it, this time with a perfectly balanced Merlot. Good old google tells me that a Merlot…

“is a varietal that sits smack dab in the middle of the red wine spectrum, with medium levels of tannin, acidity and alcohol (12-15%). It’s most famous for its red-fruit flavours (namely cherry, plum and raspberry), easy-drinking tannins and super-soft finish.”

Now aside from the alcohol content, the Giesen 0% Merlot lands smack dab where it should be on the taste scale. It’s soft, buttery, tannic with a great balance of acidity. There’s plum and cherry and a beautiful dark burgundy look to it. With wines like this you are missing nothing by removing alcohol! This one will be going straight to the top of the list come red wine season!

Eisberg Alcohol Free Merlot 6/10

Category:

Description

I have not given this much time to breathe, I must admit so hopefully that gives this wine a little grace. So far I have not been overwhelmed by the Eisberg range, their Blanc de blancs is a bit of a fail. BUT that doesn’t necessarily mean this will be a stinker.

It smells really good. Like wine as opposed to Ribena. It’s a deep red current colour like a good merlot should be.

Unfortunately that’s about as good as it gets. This non-alcoholic red is FINE but it is not lighting anyone’s world on fire. Its got very little depth, very little grip, it’s not lingering in the mouth at all. It’s not overly sweet and you get a little tannin there but it’s otherwise FLAT as. Very one dimensional. The good news is there are LOAD’s of great non-alc reds that make up for this flop.

If you’re looking for a cheap and cheerful option look no further than Lindeman’s Can Sav, it’s the best $12 you’ll ever spend. Some more recent discoveries that are winners are Sobriety Society Shiraz Tempranillo and Odd Bird’s Organic Red. Both smashing wines.

Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz 8/10

Category:

Description

After the disappointment I had with the non-alcoholic Wolf Blass Bubbles, I have to say my hopes were not high for the Shiraz in their new range. You might even say sceptical.

BUT… though it smells a little vinegary, this actually tastes pretty good!*

It’s robust, has good mouth feel, is dry, tannic and fruity in the way wine is supposed to be. It’s not too sweet and most importantly; unlike the bubbles, there is no off-putting aftertaste. If anything it could be a little on the side of too acidic, leaning it towards vinegar. But to me, still palatable.

If you are looking for a nice natural wine, this is not the one for you (look at the Sobriety Society Red instead). There are a few too many ingredients in there for my liking. But if you are here for taste and taste alone then you could be on to a winner. It’s low on sugar which is definitely a bonus.

Jacob’s Creek Unvined Alcohol-Removed Shiraz 7.5/10

Category:

Description

Due to the fact that I find the Jacobs Creek Unvined Sparkling to be quite a delight, I was holding out great hope for this to be super good (especially for the price point).

While it doesn’t live up to my hopes and dreams, it certainly isn’t a write off…so don’t stress if you’ve already order it and its lost in the Australia Post void!

Whilst it’s a touch sweet (like all the NA reds) it does have some balance and some body. There are some mild tannins amongst some quite rich fruit flavours. I think as always, open it really early and let it breathe for a good amount of time and I would say enjoy with food rather than on its own. A bolognaise or a fancy pizza (no Aussie pizzas with string ham here please!

If you’re not keen to chance it, try my top 2 red recommendations instead…Lindeman’s Cab Sav and the Lautus Savvy Red. Much safer bets!

Edenvale Premium Reserve Pinot Noir 5/10

Category:

Description

Edenvale, well known for their non-alcoholic wines, not exactly known for their quality non-alcoholic wines. This Pinot is part of the Premium Reserve range (the sparkling in this range did NOT land well for me).

This pours a dark rich red. Very dark. On those nose I am getting stone fruit, maybe cherry and a distinct wine-like aroma.

To taste, whoarrr. This is SWEET. With the sugar content what it is I am not surprised. There are some good characteristics there. It’s got body, a bit of tannin and a bit of chew. It coats the mouth well and it is certainly not thin. But it is JUST TOO SWEET. As I have mentioned before, the 6% grape juice concentrate used in these alcohol-free wines to give you body and texture just make it overwhelmingly sweet. Another bottle of red down the drain. Unless you want to use for a sangria or mulled wine and leave out any additional sugar, that would be your saving grace here.

Lautus De-alcoholised Savvy Red 9/10

Category:

Description

I love that this bottle of non-alcoholic wine is labelled ‘Red’. No varietal, just RED. As I mentioned in my recent Red Wine Blog “Don’t get distracted by varietals. Nothing is going to taste like it’s supposed to. If what’s in your glass bares a close resemblance to ‘dry red cask’ TAKE IT. THAT’S A WIN!”

DAMN Gina! This smells good, earthy, oaky, like red wine (minus the fumes).

*Takes sip*

Gosh. This is PRETTY jolly good! Dry, savoury, peppery, oaky flavours all balance out the rich berry fruit flavours. It’s a tiny bit thin but I think that is just something we have to live with when it comes to non-alc red wine. And it really is forgivable because this wine is scoring high in all other categories!

From the Lautus website I learn “Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage sourced from various vineyards from the Coastal region. A percentage of the grapes are picked earlier to retain acidity whilst the balance is picked at optimal ripeness.” This baby is also 9-12 month barrel aged.

It’s low everything (except flavour); low cal, sugar and carbs. It’s a lot more expensive than my favourite (to date) Lindeman’s Cab Sav but I think it has pipped it at the post.

I HIGHLY recommend! Let me know what you think! I’ll be making sure to try the rest of the range.

Pure Vision Zero Shiraz 9/10

Category:

Description

Pure Vision Zero Shiraz is an organically grown non alcoholic  2021 Shiraz from the Adelaide Plains. How good is it that we get to see regions and vintages starting to come into play in non alcoholic wines? It means they are being taken seriously by wine makers. Yay!

This Shiraz is a deep deep plum colour in the glass, intense and opaque. On the nose there are hints of black cherry and plum.

In the mouth, it is a fairly well balanced tasting alcohol free wine, with depth of flavour, a dry finish, good acidity and tannin. There are nice savoury, peppery elements there. Your whole mouth gets to experience this wine and it’s really very robust! Definity worth a try before we edge out of red wine weather!

Hardy’s ZERO Shiraz 7/10

Category:

Description

To be honest, when I heard that Hardy’s were bringing out a zero range I did a little eye roll. A big commercial winery delivering a non-alcoholic wine does not float my boat. Also, I am the LEAST wine snobby person out there (ALDI wine anyone?) and I would never have gone for a Hardy’s when I was drinking. It always screamed cheap and nasty to me.

Looking at the label, if you like clean drinking and eating, this is not the wine for you. There are a lot of things in here other than dealcoholized wine.

It smells a little musty and funky on the nose. To taste, it is not too bad. Better than I was expecting actually. It’s quite dry with deep cherry flavours. There is an aftertaste that I am not in love with, but the overall balance is pretty good. Worth a taste if you are not fussed on additives, but it’s loosing points for me on that basis.

Carl Jung De-Alcoholised Merlot 6.5/10

Category:

Description

This is cheap and cheerful and not ENTIRELY offensive. Just what you want in a drink! Ha. Its tart and has an aftertaste that is reminiscent of the real thing. It’s slightly sweeter than I would prefer but it is definitely not the sweetest I have tried. It helped me through a very late night of cake decorating and I would take this with me to dinner at a friend’s house. I would not offer it to said friend though if they are capable of drinking real red wine, they may not be your friend for long!

Lindeman’s Cabernet Sauvignon 9/10

Category:

Description

It’s taken me nearly 10 months and countless bottles but I got there eventually. IT TASTES LIKE RED WINE(minus the nasty ethanol burn obvs). I took this to a meeting last night and my committee of committed red wine drinksers all agreed. This is GOOD.

Its tannic, full bodied, got a depth of flavour to it that no others I have tried have managed to emulate through the alcohol removal process.

I had my reservations (distrust of big brands?) but I am putting 6 bottles in my shopping cart as we speak! It’s low-cal, low sugar and if you can forgive the fact that it’s not vegan and has a couple too many preservatives, you have a friend for life!

Edenvale Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon 8/10

Category:

Description

This could be a little controversial as the general consensus on all the feedback I am getting is that this is a good one. And by god, I REALLY wanted to like it. So close. It’s full bodied, complex, dry, not cloyingly sweet. Sound’s great right?

But there’s an underlying flavour component I just can’t drink past.

Soon after I stopped drinking I attempted to make red wine vinegar from the last remaining bottle of alcohol in the house. Got the ‘mother’ from a friend, did lots of googling and hoped for the best.

Three months later I realised it had failed and gone bad.

THIS is where my mind to me when I opened the Edenvale Expedition Series Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon and had my first sniff. That unfortunately carried through to the taste.

It could well be a coriander/soapy dishcloth thing, it obviously doesn’t apply to everyone because it’s getting a lot of good feedback. I think you’d better try for yourself!

Newblood Non-Alcoholic Shiraz 6/10

Category:

Description

Full-disclosure, this is not the first time I have tried this wine. I tried it last year when Dry but Wet was but a twinkle in my eye and when I was desperately hunting for a good red wine replacement. I have no notes, all I remember is that it wasn’t a win then. But I keep hearing great things and so I decided to try again, after all, your tastes change the further you get from alcohol.

The short of it is, I was pretty right first time. It pours beautifully, the colour is intense and the aroma rich and inviting. But it let me down on first sip. There’s flavour, but it’s too sweet and it lacks any body or complexity. I don’t get much tannin (maybe a smidge)and certainly no peppery vibes. Then there is the underlying “oak” flavour that I got with NEWBLOOD’s Chardonnay that tastes a little fake and lingers a little too long.

Another disappointing chapter in the ongoing saga that is non-alc red wine. If I were you I would steer clear of this one and give the Lindeman’s Cab Sav as crack. It’s got the body that this one is so sorely lacking.

Edenvale Hearth Mulled Wine 8/10

Category:

Description

I LOVE the winter warmth that a little mulled wine brings. There’s something about cupping your hands around a warm cup of spicy festive red wine that just warms my cockles.

This bottle comes ready to heat and pour, so if you can’t be bothered gathering all the required ingredients (cloves, cinnamon, organge, vanilla etc), you are sorted.

On first sip I get that beautiful, spicy mix of flavours. The clove, cinnamon, citrus all shine through and give that familiar warm hug to your taste buds. This is SWEET (as mulled wine traditionally is) so be ready for that.

If I was nit-picking (which you know I am here for) I would say it lacks a little depth and the full mouth feel you get from the better non-alcoholic reds, but with what you’re looking for in a mulled wine I would say that’s not a deal breaker. Def’s one to take on your next winter camping trip or ski retreat. I think this is my favourite thing Edenvale have produced to date!

ps. For my second cup I added some of my favourite Cab Sauv and it rounded it out nicely! Be your own mixologist!

McGuigan Zero Shiraz 4/10

Category:

Description

I used this bottle to make mulled wine and sangria…and didn’t need to add sugar. Need I say more? Fruity as F**K!

I am not sure if it’s just me but all the McGuigan Zero wines if find a little fizzy on the tongue, it’s not entirely pleasant, I don’t think its intentional and it certainly doesn’t agree with me. Might be a preservative.

Almost Zero Merlot Radiant Red 9/10

Category:

Description

Holy Moly this one is good! Like get a second mortgage and invest in a palette load good!

From first sniff I was feeling positive. It smells like the real deal. But as we all know, our noses can be deceiving!

My nose was not lying! This red is robust, full bodied, tannic and beautifully savoury. There are rich red berry notes but there is no cloying sweetness, its so so well balanced.

I’d say it’s on par with Lautus and funnily enough also from South Africa…they are onto a good thing in SA! While Lautus has your oak, this Merlot does not, or is significantly light on with it. SO it’s a cleaner finish.

BUY ALL THE WINE!!

V.no Alcohol Removed Red Wine 6/10

Category:

Description

The V.no range of non-alcoholic wines are a product of the South Australian Patritti Family Winery (est 1926). I only found this out from someone who told me they stop at the winery and top up on V.no every time they drive to Adelaide. The concept of buying non-alcoholic wine from a cellar door sounds totally lovely, quaint and a little like the good old days. Imagine being able to one day go on a non-alcoholic wine tour! Gosh I used to love a wine tour. Anyhow, I digress.

So this alcohol free red wine comes from an award winning family winery with history and presumably some good wine making chops. Does that convert to making a successful alcohol removed wine?

The smell? Not so flash. A little vinegary and off. It’s certainly not screaming ‘pour me down your throat woman!’.

The taste? Better than the smell, but not by much. She’s thin, sweet and little funky. There’s not an awful lot in terms of mouth feel, a little dry but no depth of flavour. They recommend serving chilled which may make it a little better but chilled red wine seems counter productive to me; it’s not a concept I’ve been able to get behind.

If you like your red chilled, light and refreshing then this could be the drop for you. Just not for me.

*There are some GOOD alcohol free reds. Don’t believe me? Read my Red Wine blog here.

P.S. Just remembered I have some oranges so may make a sangria rather than tip it out!

Non Alcoholic Odd Bird Low Intervention Organic Red No.1 9/10

Category:

Description

Welcome to Odd Bird’s new range of non-alcoholic, low intervention, organic wines. There is a white and a red in the range. They are both ‘Spontaneously Fermented’ which sounds like a bit of fun. What it means is the winemaker leaves the inoculation (the moment when yeast and bacteria come in contact with the liquid) up to the organisms that happen to be in the grape. This is different from other wine, where controlled yeast strains or blends are deliberately poured in. This is where we get our ‘low intervention’ model from.

The Organic Red No.1 contains hand picked Merlot and Pinot Noir grapes from the Breganze region of Italy. What can I say, this wine is a delight. I was a little worried as these is that slightly fermented smell to it, but the flavour is sensational and hits in all the right places. You get all those dark fruit flavours of blackberry and cherry. You get a dryness from the 12 month aging, a subtle oakyness and a beautiful full mouth drinking experience.

Is this “I can’t believe it’s not alcohol” level? No. We may never get that from an AF red wine. But this is far from Ribena and grape juice. It’s adult and oh so delicious.

Plus & Minus Premium Non Alcoholic Barossa Shiraz 10/10

Category:

Description

Plus & Minus have been winners for me from the beginning. Their Shiraz & Pinot have always held a special place in my heart. Both lacking a little depth, but really nailing the tannic aspect of red wine that we know and miss.

Enter the Barossa Shiraz from Plus & Minus’ newly released premium range. Lacking a little depth? NOT HERE. This wine takes what we have with the original P&M Shiraz and elevates it through the stratosphere!!

On the nose you get cherry, you get plum and a deep beautiful winey aroma. On the palette you get all that and more. She’s dry, she’s bold, she’s full of flavour, she’s earthy, she’s tannic, she’s the real freakin’ deal. Hand on my heart this is the closest I’ve come to ‘I can’t believe it’s not booze’ with an alcohol free red. I am getting placebo effect to the max.

The calories & sugar are ultra low and she’s vegan friendly. DO YOU NEED MORE REASONS TO BUY THIS WINE? NO YOU DO NOT!! Get on it. She’s a guaranteed winner in my eyes (and my mouth and belly).

Luminara Non-Alcoholic Red Blend 2018 6/10

Category:

Description

Here I am again in the Napa Valley!

This dealcoholized Red blend is 70% Pinot Noir;  30% Zinfandel grapes. The intention with this wine is there, the terroir seems considered, but it is not delivering for me on flavour.

It has black cherry aromas, like the label says, but they are overwhelming. I get almost a cough syrup vibe. Which is not what I want in my glass of red.

This follows through in flavour, more subtly so, but it’s still there. There is oak, there is tannin and acid. All the parts are there but it’s like they are not lining up and balancing right to give me my desired drinking experience. Its like they are battling to cover up the cherry flavour and sort of failing. To me the overall flavour is fake and looking at the ingredients list I am not entirely suprised. You are not getting a good clean drinking experience here.

If you are in the US and after a good non-alcoholic red, my money would be on the Lautus Savvy Red. I think it is by far a better offering than the Luminara.

Songbird Premium Reserve Shiraz 9/10

Category:

Description

Songbird is an independent non-alcoholic wine label based in Melbourne. They have quite a range of alcohol-free wines, but this is the first opportunity I have had to review one! Why not start PREMIUM hey?? This is a de-alcoholised premium reserve South Australian Shiraz, and it is vegan…huzzah!

In the glass, this pours a dark rich ruby red colour. It’s very viscous, thick, juicy, and so opaque you can barely see through it. Like a good Shiraz should be! On the nose, I get a little tartness, like plum and some rich red berry aromas.

To taste, its a leeeetle on the sweet side, you definitely get a big hit of fruit. But it is well balanced. There are nice soft tannins and it’d really rich and luscious. Far from thin! You get the full mouth experience here! I have had this open at least an hour but I am going to give it even longer and see if the extra oxidization helps even more!

Update: I have revisited the following day after giving her a night in the fridge to come into her own a little. The effect is a little drier finish, the tannins push through more, which I love. So if that is what you are into, definitely give  this non alcoholic wine the opportunity to air.
