Non Alcoholic Sparkling Wine

POP!! Is there anything more celebratory that the pop of a champagne bottle being opened? It makes someone giggle EVERY time! I’ve got good news for you…I believe sparkling wine is the space where alcohol-free makers are really hitting the nail on the head (in replicating the real deal). Some of these bubbles are leaving their still counterparts behind in a cloud of dust.

A glass of bubbles was my first order nine times out of ten. What a relief to discover it still can be! Stock up on these babies when you can, talk to your hospitality venues about stocking them, ask about BYO options…and enjoy!!

Tread Softly Everything Except Prosecco 10/10

Category:

Description

Holy Shiz. Just buy the damn wine! This is truly one of the BEST alcohol free sparkling wines I have tried. 100% in the ‘I can’t believe it’s not booze category.

Full flavoured, nice bead, REALLY well balanced, dry, great mouth feel, not too sweet. I am totally fangirling over this entire range. The Pinot Grigio, Rose, Pinot Noir and now the Prosecco are all top notch. Excellent quality, vegan, low sugar and sustainably made. For every 6 bottles sold, Tread Softly are planting a native tree and they have planted over 500,000 to date!

This is definitely leading the way in this price point!

I liked all the other Tread Softly wines. They were great. Did not like the sparkling white wine at all.

Sobriety Society Blanc de Blancs NV 10/10

Category:

Description

There is a word missing from my wine appreciation vocabulary, but I am upskilling soon so will come back once I know what I am talking about! But whatever that word it, it describes this offering from Australian non-alcoholic wine producers Sobriety Society. It might be chewy, or yeasty? Whatever it is, it’s what a good dry sparkling should be. It really holds well in your mouth and gives you total ‘I can’t believe it’s not booze’ vibes.

This is flavourful but not overly fruity, perfectly balanced with the right amount of acidity. The bead is nice and it bubbles instead of fizzes.

Sobriety Society is shaping up well for me, I really love their Shiraz Tempranillo and love this Bland de Blancs even more! It’s organic, vegan, low sugar and really one of the best wines I have tried under $20. Invest in a case an call it a day!

A must try!!

Hard for me to separate this on from the Noughty, without having sampled both at the same time.

Again, dry, beautiful beady bubbles, not overly grape juice flavoured. A brilliant mimic for the real deal. Again, a little hard to get a hold of so I recommend stocking up when available.

Brilliant and well worth the $$.

Vinada Sparkling Chardonnay 10/10

Category:

Description

Vinada is the new kid on the block here in Australia. Touted as “the World’s favourite bubbles”. The short of it is, this is a very very nice non-alcoholic sparkling wine. A 10/10!

The long of it is the Vinada Sparkling Chardonnay has a beautiful bead (not like the fizz that some other AF sparkling’s have). A full mouth feel, no skimping on flavour here! It’s balanced, citrusy, fruity but still nice and dry. I have skulled what I had to write this review and still want more!

It’s vegan, low cal & sugar. It also comes in a piccolo size which could be a very good option for hospitality or days when you don’t want a whole bottle! (do those days exist?)

There is also a Rosé in the range which is next on my to try list!

Thomson & Scott Noughty Rosé 10/10

Categories: ,

Description

JUST BUY THE DAMN WINE. YOU WON’T BE DISSAPOINTED.

We all know and love UK based Thompson & Scott for their original sparkling Chardonnay. For many, it’s the pinnacle of the alcohol free sparkling wine world. This sparkling Tempranillo adds to the family in a most excellent way.

This wine is so balanced it would have kept Jack afloat at end of Titanic. It’s the perfect blend of sweet fruit that you expect in a rosé, with a dry finish and a little acidic kick. It’s got a beautiful fine bead and an authentic yeasty mouth feel.

I’m halfway through writing this review and more than half the bottle is gone it THAT GOOD. This is a truly pleasurable drinking experience.

As with the original sparkling Chardonnay, this is certified Organic, Vegan & Halal. The sugar content is slightly higher which you would expect from a Rosé. ALSO as with the original Noughty, it can sell out very quickly so shop yours today!

Vinada Sparkling Rosé 9/10

Categories: ,

Description

Vinada is the new kid on the block here in Australia. Touted as “the World’s favourite bubbles”. The short of it is, this is a very very nice non-alcoholic sparkling wine. A 9/10!

The long of it is the Vinada Sparkling Rose has a beautiful bead (not like the fizz that some other AF sparkling’s have). A full mouth feel, no skimping on flavour here! First thing I noticed is the slightly sweet fruity finish. I say slightly because it’s not overwhelming, there’s just a hint of strawberry. You might know by now I can’t stand when wine is too sweet, this is not that. There is a beautiful balance and a dry finish. It’s the same profile you would expect from a “real” sparkling rosé.

Because I am committed to accurate reviews (and always very thirsty) I have sampled alongside the Vinada Sparkling Chardonnay. The Chardonnay I prefer, just because it’s slightly more acidic and dry. The Rosé would be perfect for a high tea or with a cheese board sitting in the sun (now I’m just dreaming).

It’s super exciting to have these new top notch drops arriving in Australia!

It’s vegan, low cal & sugar. It also comes in a piccolo size which could be a very good option for hospitality or days when you don’t want a whole bottle! (do those days exist?)

This wine is a sure fire hit and could easily fool even the savviest drinker. Enjoy!

Leitz Eins-Zwei Zero Sparkling Rosé 10/10

Categories: ,

Description

To be perfectly honest with you, in general I find non alcoholic sparkling Rosé wines to be a little on the sweet side for me. The good ones (like Noughty) I can appreciate for their taste and quality, but I am always going to favour a dryer Brut over a sweeter Rosé. Just to set the scene for you!

The Leitz range is a pretty exceptional one, everything I have tried to date has been pretty high quality (especially their Riesling).

In the glass this is a beautiful warm pink hue, very traditional colouring for a Rosé. On the nose I am getting raspberry and strawberry notes, that are a little on the tart side.

In the mouth? DELICIOUS! REALLY well balanced and erring away from the sweeter side. The Pinot Noir grapes are giving great mouth feel, great depth of flavour. It’s nicely dry, tart and fruity all at the same time. A nice light bead. This wine is well and truly refreshing!

A GREAT summer sipper!

Plus & Minus Premium Blanc de Noirs 9/10

Category:

Description

If you have been pining for a dry sparkling wine then look no further! I think the finish on this non alcoholic Blanc de Noirs is the driest I have tried, and I have tried a LOT. There are delicate fruit flavours and well rounded earthy mouth feel. You really get that roof of the mouth and back of the tongue flavour experience. There is a lot of complexity to this alcohol free wine.

I’ve only kept this at a 9/10 because I think for some it could be a little too on the acidic side. She’s definitely a little tart but as an acid lover I can handle it. Described by wine maker Corey Ryan as “a precise line of acidity” it’s clearly intentional and it is well balanced. But there’s a chew.

Definitely worth a run for your next special occasion drink!

Odd Bird Spumante Veneto Prosecco 9/10

Category:

Description

You know what I love about this (voluntary) job? I am always learning. The label on this bottle doesn’t yell “prosecco!!!” at you but it does mention the Glera grape. Now I learnt last week after reviewing the Plus & Minus Prosecco that the Glera grape means Prsosecco! So here we go…another Prosecco to review, this one produced in Italy.

Remembering again that Alcoholic Prosecco is typically characterized by a high acidity, with pear and peach, apple and often citrus and almond notes. It has a slightly lower alcohol and sugar content than its Australian and French sparkling counterparts.

This wine is a delight and ticks all the right boxes. You get all of those beautiful fruit flavours and its definitely a little on the sweet side but in a really balanced way. It’s dry and full bodied with little acidic kick. I think it looses a point for mouthfeel, it just disappears quite quickly off the palette. The sugar content is ever so slightly higher than the P&M Prosecco.

At this price I wouldn’t be wasting it on a spritz, just enjoy it as is with some delightful summer seafood or a gorgeous grazing platter. Cin Cin!

Plus & Minus Prosecco 9/10

Category:

Description

Up until today, I have always lumped Prosecco in with all other sparkling wine, assuming there must be a difference but never knowing (or caring) what is was (because booze be booze).

But Plus & Minus have released Australia’s first non-alcoholic Prosecco and that seems a good reason to dig a little deeper. What I learnt:

  • Prosecco is made from a specific type of grape, Glera. Prosecco DOC comes from a specific growing region in Italy (same as Champagne in France). P&M have sourced their Glera grapes from South Australia, so while it is not DOC, it is still made using the correct grape.
  • Prosecco is made differently to champagne, with a second tank fermentation that retains bright fresh floral and fruit aromas.
  • If you are making an Italian Spritz or a Bellini and want to be legit, you SHOULD be using Prosecco!
  • Alcoholic Prosecco is typically characterized by a high acidity, with pear and peach, apple and often citrus and almond notes. It has a slightly lower alcohol and sugar content than its Australian and French sparkling counterparts.

“ALRIGHT WOMAN…enough with the history lesson” I hear you say! How do is taste?

Well I think the Plus & Minus team have once again nailed it. I opened a bottle of their Blanc de Blancs at the same time for a bit of compare and contrast. And I have to tell you, as much as I love the BdB, I love this Prosecco more. You really get those rich fruit notes, peach, apple and citrus but not in an overkill sweet way. It’s beautifully balanced, dry with a little acidity. Like a true Prosecco, this actually has considerably less sugar than the Blanc de Blancs.

Like all Plus & Minus wines, there is the added Resveratrol (Grape Skin Extract) bonus so you’re basically getting healthier with every glass! This will be a spring/summer staple at our house!

Plus & Minus Blanc de Blancs 8/10

Category:

Description

This was a guest review from a dear friend and fellow bubbles enthusiast. ”I can not tell the difference on first sip. The aftertaste is grapey but not raisiny, it’s quite dry and doesn’t linger. It’s got lovely bubbles like the real thing. I’d you served it up to me in a blind taste test I probably wouldn’t know.”

Thanks Court & I completely agree. As with all the Plus & Minus range there is added grape skin extract which gives you that dry finish. A great “everyday” wine.

Plus & Minus Moscato 8/10

Category:

Description

I have been a Plus & Minus fan since I first began Dry but Wet back in 2020. Though their non-alcoholic wines can be a little on the light side, they have lead the way in the alcohol free wine space in Australia and set a high bar. Their wines always have texture and flavour thanks to the added grape skin extract. This sparkling Moscato is a new-ish and only available in a can, which is great when you really only want a glass or you want something that fits in your handbag.

To be honest, the idea of a Moscato scares the crap out of me. In my mind Moscato is a sickly sweet wine and something I avoided at all costs even when I was boozing. On the nose is doesn’t smell too sickly like I had imagined it would. Yes there is a sweetness, a little honeysuckle vibe but it’s quite lovely and definitely smells like a wine.

To taste, there is a sweetness there, possibly more than what I would choose to drink on the reg, but it’s balanced by a nice acidity so it is not overwhelming. Honeysuckle carries through and there are definitely some stone fruit characteristics there too. If you like a wine on the sweeter side, this is definitely worth trying, its got nice complexity and mouth feel. Plus it is really quite robust. Bubbles are a delicate fizz.

Rating: 8/10

Odd Bird Sparkling Rosé 10/10

Description

Odd Bird non-alcoholic wines are fabulous. Some of my fav’s you will find HERE. I have had this bottle of sparkling rosé in the cupboard for some time now. I’d been saving it for a special occasion. That special occasion is now reviewing it for you on a random Wednesday morning. Don’t worry, I am sure it will not go to waste!

Made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes from the Languedoc region in France, it has been aged 12 months in barrels. In the glass it is a really warm hue, more a yellow than a pink, very deep and very pretty. It smells incredible, like a wine. Fancy that!

To taste, it is everything you want in a sparkling rosé. It is smooth with a beautiful bead with flavours of apple and berry. It is sweet, but not too sweet. A really nice balanced wine with an excellent mouth feel. You can just tell that lots of love, care and quality grapes have gone into the making of this!

Next Destination 2021 Langhorne Creek Blanc de Blanc 10/10

Category:

Description

In case you have been living under a rock, Next Destination have been taking the non-alcoholic wine world by storm with some of the best alcohol-free wines on the planet. Quite a coup for a small Australian winery! My absolute favourite of theirs is the Barossa Valley Shiraz, it redefines non-alcoholic red wine. Must try!

I do love a celebratory bubbles and will be stocking up ahead of the holiday period. In the glass this is a delightful warm straw colour. It smells exceptional. Like SO good. Distinct Chardonnay aromas and there is no mistaking that fact that this is a high quality dealcoholised wine.

To taste, it is just next level. Really really good. You get the brightness of the fruit, but there is a yeasty fullness to it that you only get in really good sparkling wine. In no way sweet, or overly acidic, this non-alcoholic sparkling is dry and perfectly well balanced. It would hold up against any non-alc sparkling in the world! Definitely in the “I can’t believe it’s not booze” category! Will be on my Christmas shopping list for sure!

Barton & Guestier Sparkling 5/10

Description

I found this wine a little on the sweet side and it became soapy in flavour after a while. I couldn’t finish the bottle which is a good indication that I did not enjoy it much. And the disappointing part was I took it untested to an important dinner date. NEVER do that!

It would be enjoyable if you prefer a sweeter style of prosecco, but it was not for me.

Non-Alcoholic Absolute Zero Dry Sparkling 7/10

Category:

Description

I wanted SO BAD to love this non-alcoholic sparkling wine. If nothing but for the extremely low sugar content. I really do love the Almost Zero Merlot that’s made by the same family winery in South Africa. And it’s sooo nearly there. But it’s not quite nailing it for me.

I was first struck by a slightly ‘grapey’ flavour (the fake kind) that has calmed down now I’ve had the bottle open a little while. Still, I find it not quite as balanced as what I like. It tips a little too hard in the acidic direction for me (and that’s saying something, because acid tongue I am!). It’s certainly dry, so what the label says is correct. It’s not sweet. Which is a big tick. It’s really just a bit too tart. And dare I say it, lacking in complexity.

There are also no ingredients on the bottle which always make me a little nervous! I do like to know what’s in my glass. It is vegan friendly, incredibly low cal and low sugar.

But with Noughty & Vinada at the same price point I will be sticking with them!

Surely Sparking Rosé 9/10

Categories: ,

Description

I am so excited, my first virtual visit to Sanoma Wine Country! And for a non-alcoholic wine none the less!

On the nose this is a little fruity, which had me a little worried.

But is it? Hell no! This Rosé is dry as a bone! The pear and guava (added to the mix) are there but they are OH SO subtle. Really interesting flavour, so far off sweet which I LOVE. Great acidity, lovely bubbles and a good mouth feel. Some non-alc wines can feel syrupy in the mouth, this is not, but you do get a lingering taste which I appreciate!

Made with the best grapes and natural ingredients, this wine is Gluten-Free, Vegan, and Keto-friendly. It’s by far the lowest calorie, lowest sugar alcohol free wine I have seen. I am sad we can’t get this in Australia, I would have it on high rotation!

Eisberg Alcohol Free Sparkling Blanc 5/10

Category:

Description

This wine is SUPER  middle of the road, a basic bitch wine! It’s very reminiscent of McGuigan’s sparkling which is far far from my favourite, but will do in a pinch. In fact it might even be 1 step down the ladder from McGuigan’s.

Pretty sweet, pretty grape juice, no balance or dryness there. Lacking in acidity. Only thing going for it really is that it’s not watery. It’s more syrupy. In fact the more I drink, the lower my rating goes! There are lots of positive reviews of this on the Sans website… maybe we are not drinking the same wine. But what I am tasting is not making the cut.

If you are in the mood for a spritz, then this would be totally fine for that, masked by a nice aperitif like Wilfred’s or Lyre’s Italian.

But otherwise I think this is probably  one to miss.

Lyre’s Classico 1/10

Category:

Description

This may be an unpopular opinion as I know many people do enjoy the Lyre’s Classico, but I find it to be undrinkable.

Firstly, it is trumped up grape juice rather than a dealcohlised wine.

Secondly, it is sweet as all hell and has a shocking chemical aftertaste. Its reminiscent of grape bubble gum. Quite frankly, YOU DESEVE SO MUCH BETTER!! And at the $19 price point you can GET so much better…Sobriety Society’s Blanc de Blancs is a winner as is the Tread Softly Prosecco.

I can’t even think of a secondary use for this, down the drain it goes!

Wolf Blass Zero Sparkling Cuvee 7/10

Category:

Description

I’ve put more effort into giving this wine a go than I have ever with any other non-alcoholic wine. I’ve tried it multiple times at different times of the day for the last 2 days. For some reason I have been bloody minded and determined to give it a pass mark. Maybe it’s the prestigious name, the winery that comes with so much experience.

But unfortunately for me, this is so close, but no cigar. All the elements are there. It’s dry, chewy, acidic. Everything hits very strongly on the back of the tongue and the roof of the mouth. Even now as I write I am trying to trick myself into liking it. But there is just this underlying bad taste that I can’t get out of my mouth. I can’t put my finger on it, it’s just something off that makes me screw up my face. There’s no way in hell I could get through a whole glass let alone a bottle. I want to say bad feet, that’s the best I can do.

Also if you are in any way concerned about what goes into your wine, this one is not for you. The ingredients list is about as far from natural as you can get.

This is so close to good that I still think it could be worth a go, especially if you’re after something super dry. This after-taste I am getting might just be your jam!

Eisberg Alcohol Free Sparkling Rosé 7.5/10

Categories: ,

Description

Up until this point I had not met an Eisberg wine I have liked. Their Merlot and Sparkling Blanc have both landed in the sink. I have been surprised to see this has a lot of positive reviews on the Sans website and I am intrigued!

On the nose you get delicate rose and berry notes. In the glass this is a lovely warm, deep pink hue and there is a delicate and fine bead.

In the mouth, although a little syrupy (the sugar content is quite high), the flavours are actually quite pleasing. There’s a dryness, a little tart and some delicate strawberry notes. Is it the best alcohol free sparkling Rosé? No (you’re much better off with this one). Is it offensive and undrinkable? No. And if your preference is towards a sweeter Rosé then this would definitely be worth a try. Its got good body and viscosity and it coats the mouth really nicely!

McGuigan Zero Dry Sparkling 6/10

Category:

Description

This is what I would call “emergency wine”. If my online orders are depleted and I need to take a bottle for a social occasion, then this is readily available even in the country.

It’s not great but will do in a pinch. I’d say a little on the sweet side and doesn’t have the flavour profile of the better wines. Works well if you want to make spritz! A bigger calorific load that those rated above also.

Tempus Two Zero Prosecco 7/10

Category:

Description

The big wine brands launching non-alcoholic extension offerings have come thick and fast this Dry July! As well as a large Tempus Two range, Hardys have also released an alcohol free range. What does this mean? There is money to be made. And the alcohol producers are seeing it and making sure they are getting part of the action.

It also means more options for us as the consumer…yay! This one is an example of where I would urge you to read your labels. The ingredients on this one, not so clean (kinda like me the time I spewed at the Tempus Two cellar door on a Hunter Valley wine tour). As well as de-alcoholised wine you get a nice side of preservatives and thickener, sounds tasty. As I have mentioned before it always pays to check the ingredients of your NA wine if you care about what you are drinking.

In the glass this is a glorious light straw colour, with a fairly aggressive bead.

Flavour-wise this just falls a little flat (the bubbles are there fizzing away don’t worry) just quite one dimensional. You’re not getting that full mouth feel and there is not much complexity to what is there. I get a sherberty fizz, a fair whack of acidity that feels like it is there to balance out the sweetness. The sugar content is a little on the higher side.

It is fine. Not offensive and in a pinch you could make do, but it is not saying “hello I am a wine” to me. It’s like what we had on offer a good 12 months ago but products have got a lot better. In the same price range you could enjoy  a delicious Sobriety Society Blanc de blancs or a Tread Softly Prosecco.

Non-Alcoholic Leitz Sparkling Riesling 9/10

Category:

Description

This is a really nice, crisp, dry sparkling wine. I am a fan of the Leitz still Riesling, so I thought it would land well and huzzah! It has!

It’s got the acidity you’d expect from a Riesling; a really nice full range of flavours, stone fruit with a little tartness. This may be a little strongly acidic for you, if you’re not that way inclined. But I think overall there is a nice balance. It smells like wine, tastes like wine, IS wine, just with the wobbly bits removed.

It’s really quite low on the sugar scale too which is always a win.

A must try!!

Brown Brothers Prosecco Rosé NV Zero 10/10

Categories: ,

Description

Brown Bothers have finally extended their non-alcoholic wine range after the success of their Zero Prosecco. That is an excellent example of a non-alcoholic sparkling wine and I am hoping this delightful-looking Rosé is the same!

This is a beautiful deep pink hue, so lovely in the glass. It smells freakin amazing. A little on the sweet strawberry side but it smells like a legit wine which is so often not the case!

To taste, this has everything you love about their original non-alc prosecco. It’s really dry and crisp. The bubbles are robust and give you excellent body. There is a tartness that I love but it’s not too acidic either. There are delicate strawberry and citrus flavours and a really nice full mouth feel. Defs my drink of the week. So glad I ordered two bottles!

Edenvale Premium Reserve Sparkling Blanc de Blanc 2/10

Category:

Description

This review is pretty much a cut and paste from the Fizzero.

No good, waaaay too much like grape juice/raisin water. Went straight down the drain. All of the Edenvale wines that I have seen contain 6% Grape juice concentrate, which is a MASSIVE red flag for me.

Fizzero Sparkling White 2/10

Category:

Description

I’ll keep this short and sweet, much like my experience with Fizzero.

One mouthful was all it took for me to realise that Fizzero and I were never going to be friends. Fizzero is to alcohol free wine what Kraft cheese singles are to a quality aged cheddar. There is no comparison. Fizzero is essentially carbonated grape juice. The ingredients tell you as much.

Do yourself a favour and don’t let this drink ever darken your doorstep.

Chateau del ISH Blanc de Blanc Cans 10/10

Category:

Description

A short review this one. This wine in a can is BLOODY GOOD YOU MUST TRY IT!

Super yeasty on the nose, this alcohol-free sparkling wine does not disappoint in the mouth. Really robust, full bodied, dry but still lots of lovely fruit flavours. Some nice juicy grapes were harmed in the making of this! A really nice gentle fizz. I can’t fault it.

Spring is on the way and as such, so is the demand for  a little something tasty you can slip into your handbag or your picnic hamper. ISH Sparkling wines are only available in can at this stage, but are perfect for on the go or when you just feel like one (apparently that’s a thing:  never happens to me!)

And good value too. A 4 pack of cans runs at $26.65 which makes it and under $20 equivalent bottle of wine!

Cipriani Zero Alcohol Free White Sparkling 2/10

Category:

Description

Do yourself a favour and do not buy this drink. I say drink because based off of the ingredients* list, this is not a wine, it’s another construct. And boooy does it taste like one.

It bears no resemblance to wine at all. It very VERY sweet, weak flavoured sparkling grape juice. Its so high in sugar that it’s giving me a syrupy coating in my mouth. If you’re looking for a wine experience you will not get it here! Take your $27 and treat yourself to a nice bottle of Noughty or Wild Life Botanicals.

This is so disappointing as the Cipriani Bellini is SUCH a delight!

*Non-alc (unlike alcohol) must list it’s ingredients so it’s actually a good way of getting a fair idea about what your drinking experience will be like. Hared I know when you are shopping online, but if you ever are in doubt or curious, hit me up and I can do some expert digging for you!

Jacob’s Creek Unvined Sparkling 8/10

Category:

Description

Very commercial wine brands making non-alcoholic wine options make me wary. Am I a snob? Maybe. But I do have a bias that always makes me a little sceptical about them being any good. And I am very happy to be proven wrong, Lindeman’s Alcohol Free Sparkling for example is really pretty bloody good!

Jacob’s Creek starts out well. Really nice on the nose. Smells like wine, always a good start! The bead is fine and good, not over fizzy like some cheaper wines can be.

Taste is GOOD, I just made an oghh noise!

It’s got body, citrus zest, good depth, but doesn’t linger on the palette. The label doesn’t give much away but I am guessing it’s in the chardonnay family.

This is a great everyday wine (if you’re like me an save your Noughty & Vinada for special occasions!)

I am always happy to be pleasantly surprised and this Jacob’s Creek Unvined Sparkling has certainly done that!

Edenvale Sparkling Cuvee 8/10

Category:

Description

After my disappointment with the Tempranillo in the Edenvale Expedition Series, I was a little nervous about cracking this bottle. I had heard a lot of positive things about it and am always hopeful of finding exciting new options.

Turns out there was no need to be nervous! Nice pop, enticing aroma, and my first mouthful was quite a surprise. The flavour here is LEGIT. A real fully bodied traditional cuvee profile. Not too sweet, a citrus finish with a real depth of flavour. It’s a very decent mimic for the real thing. Certainly a step up from the McGuigan (best saved for spritz).

My only minor note is that the finish is more “fizzy” than “bubbly”. There’s no real bead happening in the glass and the mouth feel is more sherbet than champagne. But it’s a minor trade off for the excellent flavour.

Freixenet Alcohol Removed Sparkling 7/10

Category:

Description

This wine I picked up when doing a little recce in Dan Murphy’s recently to see if their range had improved (it hadn’t but I think that’s about to change now they see the potential)

It’s a very cheep and cheerful bottle from the powerhouse brand (that I’ve only just heard about)Freixenet.

What can I say, apart from surprisingly, this is not too bad. I was honestly expecting to pour it straight down the sink. But it’s certainly not too sweet. If anything I would say that it’s almost too on the tart side, quite acidic in fact. There’s not much depth to it and there is a strange lingering aftertaste that I can’t quite put my finger on, but on the whole it’s not overly offensive. For the price of the bottle it would be great for a spritz.

It’s carbonated and the bead in it disappeared really quickly and if you have any regard for what’s in your wine, the ingredients list reads like something out of a horror movie, so this may not be for you. If you are in a pinch and have to resort to Dan’s I would choose this over McGuigan’s Sparkling any day.

I have very mixed feelings on this wine. On the one hand, it’s what a lot of have been waiting for from a non-alcoholic wine. It’s organic, vegan, preservative and added sulphite free (the first of it’s kind in the world!). That’s great for me… no risk of an upset tummy and you can feel confident in what you’re putting in your body.

But the trade off for me is the taste. Not that this has a BAD taste per se. It’s just too sweet for my dry and acidic loving palette. It’s described as pear and apple forward with citrus notes. What I get is much more of a peach vibe. It’s like drinking a Bellini without actually adding any Cipriani Virgin Bellini.

It has a good mouth feel, nice and rich and buttery, a lovely soft bead. If you’ve been looking for a bubbles on the sweeter side, this is your dream wine. If not this would be an excellent option for Christmas day breakfast bubbles in place of a Bellini ?

Lyre’s Classico Prosecco Style RTD 3/10

Description

The Lyre’s Classico is not Prosecco. It is a Prosecco Inspired RTD. As they have just released a fancy 750ml bottle of the stuff, I thought it timely that I get around to sharing my thoughts on the product.

So unlike non-alcoholic sparkling wine that is made as a full strength wine and then the alcohol delicately removed, the Lyre’s Classico is a construct. A collection of ingredients bought together to simulate a prosecco experience. That is; carbonated water, sugar and non-alcoholic fermented grape juice concentrate (plus a few too many others to mention).

And to me, this tastes as fake as it sounds. Cloyingly sweet. Nose wrinkling sweet. There is a little bitterness in there which I do quite like but it’s certainly not enough to redeem it as an acceptable Prosecco replacement. To me this is giving sparkling grape juice vibes to the max.

I believe this was created to accompany the Lyre’s Italian Spritz in making an easy spritz cocktail option and maybe the Italian Spitz (the only Lyre’s product I’ve liked to date) is the only thing that could redeem the Classico.

If you want a great non-alcoholic Prosecco option, try the Plus & Minus Prosecco, it’s really really good. If you are wanting a wine that is single serve get Vinada’s Sparkling Chardonnay, it comes in a handy piccolo size.

Non-Alcoholic Brown Brothers Prosecco Ultra Low 10/10

Category:

Description

The only thing the smell of this wine is missing is the toxic waft of ethanol (you know the one), but sanitize your hands and then have a drink and you’d be on to a winning formula! What I am saying is that this wine SMELLS AMAZING. Not chemical or fake or grape juicy. It smells like sparkling wine. So. A good start!

So how is the taste? It’s pretty bloody good. My first impression was how dry it is. Dry and crisp and tart and with that real yeasty (yes that sounds gross but that’s what they call it) mouth feel you expect from a good bubbles. This really hits you on the roof of your mouth as well as everywhere else! And it sticks with you long after that mouthful has disappeared down your throat.

These flavours are strong and robust and a really really good mimic for the real thing. The flavours are so strong even this liquid pig can’t skull a glass at a time. This is a delight by itself but it would also be beautiful paired with a glorious cheese platter or some sumptuous seafood.

A must try!!

V.NO Alcohol Removed Sparkling Wine 6/10

Category:

Description

Have we reached a point in our friendship where I can leave one word reviews? If we have, mine here would be “meh”.

Whilst the V.No Alcohol removed sparkling is not offensive that’s not really a standard I look for in a non alcoholic wine. A pass is not good enough. This is on par with say a McGuigan’s. A little bit apple, a bit too sweet and raisiny and not quite erring enough on the side of wine. Like there’s maybe a HINT that it was once wine, but it’s too many steps removed. This would be perfectly fine for making a spritz or a sangria but by itself it’s just not balanced enough for me.

My recommendation at this price point would be to spend the extra $2 and enjoy a much more sophisticated drink with a Plus & Minus Blanc de blancs or Prosecco.

This wine is vegan, but it is on the higher side of the cals and sugar scale.
