Non Alcoholic Beer

A girl walks into a bar and asks for “the least beery beer”. I was a craft brewers worst nightmare. I wanted beer that was light and crisp and really easy to slam. Now I am not drinking to get drunk, I am learning on the job and taking a deep dive in to the flavour filled world of AF beer. Which seems to be made up of a lot of really good quality “I can’t believe it’s not butter” level beers, a LOT of Australian made and a LOT to review!

Heaps Normal Coffee Run Stout 9/10

Category:

Description

Who doesn’t love a stout?!! Well, lots of people actually LOL. The intense flavour profile of a stout may be a bit much for the more light and easy beer drinkers out there, but I’ve been on the dark beers since back in my uni days ($6 jugs of Monteiths Black thank you very much Shadz) and enjoy the full, bitter taste experience.

Heaps Normal’s Coffee Run Stout is a limited edition release and it’s an interesting collaboration with Newcastle-based roasters Floozy Coffee. This contains their cold brew arabica coffee, so I won’t be downing multiple cans of an afternoon for fear of caffeine-induced insomnia (delicate petal that I am) but it does bring a level of intensity that I am excited about!

In the glass, this pours a deep, opaque chocolatey brown with a decent head. On the nose, mmmm heavenly. Coffee notes and a rich full stout aroma. To taste, there is quite a lot going on. You get a nice bitter punch from the coffee, there’s a bit of tartness and acidity there and some caramel in the finish. I’d say it is a little thinner than what I was hoping for, but honestly I find that to be the case pretty consistently with non alcoholic stouts. I think that body that we are looking for must come from the booze.

Overall I think this is a tasty drop, to be enjoyed beside the fire with some shellfish or smoked meat.

Heaps Normal Another Lager 10/10

Category:

Description

Heaps Normal was my first love when it came to discovering beer with flavour, my first foray into the craft beer world.

The irony of them choosing to release a STRAIGHT UP OLD SCHOOL lager as their second release is not lost on me. This is exactly what you’d expect from a lager. It’s no craft lager, it’s an Aussie pub classic through and through. Get this pouring in a pub and ooooh lookout, you’ve got your perfect schnitzel match made in heaven.

This beer is light, really well balanced, bitter like a lager and really refreshing. It very much does what it says on the can. It’s no BS!

I would take this over a Heineken ANY day of the week. Top stuff!

Bridge Road Free Time Alcohol Free Pale Ale 10/10

Category:

Description

There’s lot’s to love about Bridge Road. The Gorman outlet store, The Gorman outlet store AND the Gorman outlet store. Now we can add Bridge Road Brewers to that prestigious list! Except of course THIS Bridge Road is located in beautiful Beechworth. The team have been nailing the full strength brews for YEARS and have only more recently added a zero offering to their production range.

What they have achieved with this beer totally speaks to those years of experience. This Pale Ale is up there with the best non-alcoholic beers. It’s got body, its hoppy, fruity but only subtly. It’s not particularly bitter which is a big tick from me. It’s so damn refreshing you won’t want to stop at one (good job you don’t have to!)

In a side by side pale ale tasting I did last year, this was the stand out. By a country mile.

I could drink 1000!

Heaps Normal Half Day Hazy 10/10

Category:

Description

Just in time for Summer, non-alcoholic beer DAHHLINGS Heaps Normal have gifted us a new release. The Half Day Hazy. This is a hazy IPA. I have tasted it and it is good. But what I am keen to find out, is how it compares to their very popular XPA. In my head they down seem so different to one another, but I am keen to crack them side-by-side to see where the difference lies!

In the the glass the Hazy is a more amber colour than the XPA and for obvious reasons, and quite opaque (being a Hazy, it’s hazy!). Hmmm taste wise I would say the Hazy is a little heavier and more hop-forward than the XPA. While the XPA is quite light and crisp, the Hazy has more body and bitterness to it. It’s got some great tropical fruit flavours and a really great mouth feel.

Again another highly sessionable beer from non-alcoholic beer experts Heaps Normal. A definite winner!

Heaps Normal 10/10

Category:

Description

As I have said before, I am pretty new to this ‘beer with flavour’ caper. But I am getting into it. Slowly. After a few goes, what I have to say is I LOVE HEAPS NORMAL. I’ve drunk the Kool-Aid. I’m in.

It’s refreshing, full bodied and flavourful. There is a REALLY good balance of bitter and malty sweetness. You could sit and put a fair few away if your heart desired.

I’ve had people balk a little at the price. Yes, its more than a CUB slab. But it’s less than an equivalent craft brewed line and considering the R&D that’s gone into developing it, I’d say well worth the $.

You could blind taste test this bad boy and even the most savvy beer drinker wouldn’t pick that it’s AF. I am a Pale Ale convert!

Hop Nation Mind Ya Head XPA 9/10

Category:

Description

I must tell you, I am already a fan of this non alcoholic beer, I just had not gotten around to formally reviewing it yet. The Mind Ya Head is one of three non-alcoholic beers in Melbourne-based Hop Nation Brewing Co’s arsenal. This was their first and gosh darn it’s a winner! (as is their feisty Raspberry Sour…yum!)

It’s a really pale straw colour, slightly hazy and pours with a nice head.

I love this non-alcoholic XPA because it is so well balanced. Not too bitter, not too fruity, its a perfect example of an XPA. It’s light and refreshing, and it has a great mouth feel to boot! A highly sessionable beer that I will continue to include in my tasting events.

Molly Rose Citra Citra 10/10

1344

Category:

Description

Molly Rose is a craft brewery in Collingwood, Melbourne and Citra Citra was their first foray  in non-alcoholic beer. (They also have a beautiful gose but more on that another day!)

I have loved this beer for a long time and can’t believe it’s taken me this long to review! This alcohol free citrus IPA is SO intense and packed full of flavour. It is so deeply refreshing and satisfying with great citrus flavours. A good orange hit first up. It is a good balance of bitter (I am not a massive bitter fan) and hoppy, malty goodness.

It is quite rich and I certainly wouldn’t be smashing them like water, but definitely worth a try if you love a full flavoured and bodied beer!

If you love a good citrus IPA this is definitely worth a crack!

Mornington Free Non-Alc Pale Ale 8/10

Category:

Description

This beer is one of two non-alcoholic beers from the Mornington Peninsular Brewery. This non-alcoholic pale ale is a light amber colour and it pours with a good head (you might be surprised to know this can be difficult to achieve with a non-alc beer!)

It smell really light, fruity and tropical. And it kind of tastes exactly that also. Light, fruity and tropical. It’s definitely refreshing, the bitterness is fairly low but I do find it slightly wanting in robustness. A beer like Lightning Minds Pale Ale certainly has more depth and character to it.

This alcohol free Pale Ale is far from awful, it just needs a little more in my mind.

Sidewinder XPA Deluxe 8/10

Category:

Description

I am longing for the day where it is warm enough to be craving an ice cold beer. Right now I just have to close my eyes, sit in front of the heater and pretend. Sidewinder is the non-alcoholic range of three beers from Melbourne’s Brick Lane Brewing.

This smells just like you’d hope a good XPA would smell. Fruity, hoppy and beery. To taste it ticks most of the boxes for me. It is nice and tropically fruity, its bitter and has reasonable body and mouthfeel. It’s very refreshing. My only non-tick of approval is that it’s a little thin for what I expected. But not in way that writes it off at all. Very smashable and refreshing. Defintily one to add to the list for summer bevs!

Bach Brewing All Day Non-Alcoholic IPA 9/10

Category:

Description

As an incredibly parochial New Zealander living in Australia, it gave my heart a little flutter to write New Zealand in that little Country of Origin box. I am so glad that things are starting to happen in the Kiwi non-alc scene. Now all we need is more wine!

This non-alcoholic IPA is one of two non-alc beers currently being made by Bach Brewing (to those uninitiated, a Bach is a NZ holiday house!). They also have a hazy which is on my to-try list!

This IPA pours really nicely and is quite a deep amber in the glass. It smells a little fruity and tropical but is not over the top. To drink, its just a really bloody nice non-alcoholic IPA! I’d say balanced, a little hoppy, a little bitter, a little fruity in all the right places. A really tasty and really sessionable non-alc beer.

It wins bonus points for being REALLY low cal and low sugar. Can’t wait to try the hazy now!

Lightning Minds Pale Ale 9/10

Category:

Description

Lightning Minds Pale Ale is a new-ish beer from WA’s first, dedicated non-alcoholic brewery. It’s a non-alcoholic Pale Ale made with  Mosaic, Galaxy and Simcoe hops.

It’s a delightful dark amber colour and it pours with a good head. On the nose there are really strong tropical aromas and a little bit of maltiness.

To taste, oooh yum. I really like this alcohol free beer. Its hoppy, bitter and balanced. That malty flavour carries through but it is not dominant and sweet, like some NA beers can be. Because of the bitterness I couldn’t drink a tonne of these, but all up it’s a great example of a non-alcoholic pale ale!

Peroni Nastro Azzurro Zero 10/10

Category:

Description

Words cannot express how HAPPY I am that Peroni have ditched the shit water that was their Libera and have instead created a 0.0% version of their traditional Nastro Azzuro. My beer of choice for so many years.

This is PERFECTION. It is so dead on for the real thing that I can’t believe it. They have crafted full strength Nasturo Azzuro to the traditional recipe and then gently removed the alcohol. If you love sinking Peroni’s under the hot summer sun you are going to love this! A perfect lager beer, light, refreshing, crisp and a good balance of bitter and sweet.

Sobah Pepperberry IPA 8/10

Category:

Description

Sobah are at the forefront of non-alc beer in Australia. They have been blazing trails since 2017 with their unique beers infused with native ingredients.

In this IPA the NSW Pepperberry is the star of the show. This is somewhat lighter on the IPA spectrum, both is cals & carbs and also flavour, but it is far from lacking. The Pepperberry gives such a spicy bitterness and really carries the whole thing. It’s light, but not too light, super refreshing and really very moreish. I’d say it’s not quite as heavy on the citrus notes as I would expect from an IPA but that takes away nothing.

I really love everything that Sobah do and stand for. From raising awareness of Indigenous culture, to ethically sourcing their ingredients, to making tasty beers that are vegan friendly and low intervention. Can’t wait to try more of the range!

Sobah Davidson Plum Gluten Free Ale 9/10

Category:

Description

Pink beer? Yes Please! Australia’s only gluten free beer? Yes please!

Sobah’s seasonal release has now been added to their core range so you can enjoy this delicious fruity ale all year long. This is a straight up ale with a twist. A great balanced beer with medium bitterness and a delicious tangy twist of Davidson Plum. It’s really nice and light but not lacking in flavour at all. Interestingly there is a hint of cloudy apple juice added to really lift and emphasis the plum. A super cool release from Australia’s OG of non-alcoholic craft beers.

VandeStreek Playground IPA 10/10

Category:

Description

What can I say, it was love at first sight. How come beer is winning at amazing labels? Lift your game wine!

This SMELLS incredible, beautiful floral, malt and citrus notes on the nose. The flavours are STRONG in an absolutely delightful way. So balanced, such a full mouth feel. It’s nothing short of luxurious! Citrus from the hops balance out the bitter finish so so well. I am overwhelmed in a really good way. In general, non-alc beer is winning in terms of matching the real deal. And VandeStreek is Winning in terms of non-alc beer. You’d be really hard pressed to pick this out as non-alc in a blind taste test.

At $29.95 a 6 pack, she ain’t cheap. What I would call this a special occasion or LUXURY beer. Given how full and rich it is you won’t be smashing them 6 pack at a time though so it’s ok! But totally well worth it when you feel like splashing out!

Big Drop Poolside DDH IPA 10/10

Category:

Description

It’s not exactly poolside weather right now where I am, but that doesn’t mean it’s not beer weather. What is a DDH IPA you might well ask? This is a double dry hopped IPA, meaning it goes through the hopping process TWICE, with the intention of giving you a real punch of hoppy flavour in your beer.

Hops used here are a blend of Azacca, Chinook, Mosaic and Motueka hops. I know not what any of that means (I am no craft beer aficionado) but what I DO know is that what you get is a big, tropical, fruity and robust profile. This beer is full of flavour, has a good balance of bitter and an excellent full mouth feel. There are pineapple and citrus notes but it’s all tied together with a nice piney herbacousness.

This beer is far from thin but it’s not too sweet like some non alcoholic beers can tend towards. Delicious!

Heineken 0.0 Lager 8/10

I have to say I have not done much investigating in the AF beer space. Main reason being, the Heineken 0.0 lager was the first I tried and it hit the nail on the head for me.

Light, just beery enough, lower carb and impossible to tell it’s AF! 10/10 and really hits the spot on a warm day

Hop Valley H2O 10/10

Category:

Description

I am not sure this should be sitting in the beer category as technically, it is not a beer. But it is beer adjacent (sort of) so here she sits. Sparkling hop water is fairly self explanatory. It’s water that has been infused with hops. There’s no fermentation involved, so no trace alcohol, gluten or sugar. It’s essentially a sparkling hop tea.

Crack the lid, it smells like a beer, a light IPA vibe. POUR it, and it looks like soda water! Wha? So mind bending. Taste it and it’s very much it’s own thing. Its reminiscent of a beer with light hoppy, fruity flavours, but it’s not trying to be a beer. Like if you watered down an IPA with sparkling water(not in a yuck way though, in a good way. A modern shandy? I’m not selling this!).

It’s intensely refreshing, light, very moreish (I have struggled to sit on this 6 pack long enough to write this review!) and I will be buying by the slab and enjoying all summer long with a squeeze of lemon.

Congrats to the Heads of Noosa Brewing Co for delivering such a unique product!

Asahi Dry Zero 0.00% 5/10

Category:

Description

In getting all the details together to review this non-alcoholic gluten-free beer, I made a rather interesting discovery…that is not a beer AT ALL! It’s a non-alcoholic beer-flavoured drink! Never in all of my time as chief reviewer have I ever come across such a thing! Now if you’re after a natural product, this is not for you. The ingredients read like a meth lab, BUT I’m always keen to try something alcohol-free, gluten free and calorie free…as long as it’s not FLAVOUR free.

Well…is it? Firstly, it pours like a beer, good head and it looks like a beer. It smells…like a beer. So far so good Mr non-beer. To taste. Ha yep. She is THIN. This hits the roof of your mouth with bitter notes but the rest of it falls flat. There is little to no body and it definitely does not linger on the tongue. There’s a slightly metallic element to it also. As someone who once loved the wateriest beer humanly possible, even this one is taking it too far. I guess that’s what happens when you are an actual faux beer! If you like it light or you’re desperate for a GF option, give it a crack, otherwise give the real-deal Asahi Super Dry 0.0% a go!

Asahi Super Dry 0.0% 9/10

Category:

Description

Boy oh boy have I drunk a butt tonne of Asahi in my time. This and  Peroni were always my go-to when sinking beers on a Saturday afternoon (a concept that luckily now feels strangely foreign to me now, huzzah!). Our local Japanese restaurant stoked this non-alcoholic Asahi cans for a time and boy was it nice to enjoy a cold one with my okonomiyaki! I have not however tackled this with my reviewer hat on, so here we go!

This definitely hits my lager loving spot. Nice pour, nice head. REALLY good balance of flavours. There’s bitter but its well rounded and supported by some good mouth feel. It lingers on the tongue but isn’t too malty. Writing this review as we head into winter, I wish I had discovered this coming into summer as these are extremely smashable and thirst quenching.

I’ll be heading back to our Japanese restaurant and begging them to stock up for sure!

Hop Nation No Fool Non-Alc Raspberry Sour 9/10

Category:

Description

Another week, another pink beer to review… how fabulous!

Hop Nation’s Mind Ya Head is an excellent non-alcoholic XPA that I actually have not yet reviewed. This ‘ No Fool’ Raspberry Sour is now Hop Nation’s third non-alcoholic beer offering. So it must be going pretty well for the Footscray based brewery!

This sour is a beautiful Raspberry hue in the glass, with a nice foamy head. She’s also fairly hazy. Very strong sour profile on the nose, you can tell they have fermented this with real raspberries!

To taste, it is delicious. Not as intensely sour as I was anticipating from the smell, but a really nice balanced amount of sour. It’s quite a light bodied and refreshing beer with a slightly malty finish. Really tasty and really sessionable. Yum!

Lager Day Saints 8/10

Category:

Description

Non alcoholic lagers are the new black! It seems like everyone is having a crack at bringing us quality, sessionable, non alcoholic lagers. Now I am biased but to me you’d be hard pressed to improve on the perfection of the Peroni Nastro Azzuro. But in the interests of supporting smaller producers and independently produced alcohol free drinks I am giving the Lager Day Saints a good run!

Made using a limited ferment yeast (unlike the Peroni that is dealcoholised), this lager is everything that you would expect from a lager. It’s clean, refreshing, light and entirely smashable. For me it could be a little more forward with some body, but I think the flavour profile carries it!

Corona Cero 0.0% 2/10

Category:

Description

I used to LOVE a Corona. Could drink them by the literal bucket load. So light and refreshing and easy to drink.

Now that I am on the alcohol free train I thought that the Corona Cero would naturally tick all the boxes. If you were in the same boat, I have bad news for you. This Corona Cero review is not positive one. In fact this alcohol free beer is one of the most repulsive I have tried. It is gross. It has a sweet, slightly metallic taste to it. In fact it is almost sickly. The ingredients list is nasty as is the nutritional info. This is the highest calorie and carb non-alcoholic beer I have come across, by a loooong shot.

I struggled to drink enough to write this review and I can gladly throw out the remainder of the cans. This bad boy is unsalvageable even with a squeeze of lime! If you are looking for a lager you are much better off with a  Heaps Normal Another Lager or even a Heineken.

Upflow Non-Alcoholic New World IPA 8/10

Category:

Description

I preface this review by saying, I have NO idea what I am talking about. As I have said before, I never drank craft beer, couldn’t tell an IPA from an XPA from a Gose. I have none of the fancy terminology but I am getting the taste for these beers. So I’ll describe this the best I know how.

The Upflow Brewing New World IPA is a bitter more bitter that I was expecting, but it has the body and flavour to compliment it well. It’s not bitter and thin like other non alcoholic beers that I have tried. Google tells me that Some IPAs can taste like pure citrus, while others are strong and bitter. This one definitely fits the strong and bitter bill. It’s refreshing and not overly heavy, you don’t feel like you’re drinking a meal in a can.

Definitely one to try!

UpFlow Non Alcoholic Stout 9/10

Category:

Description

I LOVE a stout. When I was at university one of my go-to drinks of choice was Monteith’s Black, by the jug. Yum. To be honest I think I favoured it because it was higher in alcohol ha! But the seed was planted then an there in terms of flavour and a good appreciation. I love a Guinness and can’t wait to try the 0.0 version in the UK!

Upflow are an Australian dedicated non-alcoholic brewery with a focus on creating flavourful and quality non-alcoholic beers. The stout is one of a range of four.

I love this because I think it’s one of the more robust on the market. Some alcohol free stouts can feel a little thin, but the Upflow Stout is anything but. She is rich, robust with tangy coffee, caramel and nutty flavours. And as she warms up she opens up a whole lot, so I would take this out of the fridge a little while before you want to imbibe. A really lovely winter drink!

UpFlow Non-Alcoholic Hypotonic Classic Pale Ale 10/10

Category:

Description

This non-alcoholic pale ale from dedicated non-alcoholic brewery Upflow is “hypotonic”. What exactly does that mean? This alcohol-free beer has added electrolytes to help keep you hydrated on hot or active days. It’s a beer with benefits that go beyond being booze free.

It pours nicely has a good head, is a warm amber colour and is quite hazy. It smells amazing and has nice tropical notes, what you’d expect from a pale ale. And damn it tastes good too. Fruity, well rounded, great mouthfeel and a really nice balance of flavours. It isn’t too bitter or sweet and it has a really great depth of flavour. A really good example of a well done non-alcoholic pale ale. And I love that the added electrolytes are going to help hydrate rather than dehydrate. Very refreshing and crisp!

It’s nice and low sugar too at only  1.4g per 100ml. Absolutely nothing to fault here!

Big Drop Woodcutter Brown Ale 9/10

Category:

Description

When I was at uni I had a love affair with Newcastle Brown. It was definitely a go to on long evening sessions a the London Bar (RIP). So when I was told that the new Big Drop drop was a similar drink to Newcastle Brown I got a little excited. Bearing in mind it has been a good 20+ years since I have enjoyed a brown ale!

It pours a beautiful deep amber with a good frothy head (especially if you’re a rough pourer like me!). The smell instantly takes me back to sticky carpets and indoor smoke of the early 2000’s. The flavour is pretty spot on too! Caramelly, malty with a nice bitter finish, this holds onto your mouth well.

I’ll be sending a can to my Dad to get his professional opinion (as the one who got me onto the NB in the first place) but for me this is a winner. Team it with a good hearty winter meal and you can’t go wrong!

Wilde Guru Sparkling Hop Water 10/10

Category:

Description

Hop Waters are great! Particularly for summer. If you love the refreshing taste of a light beer but want a zero cal option, these are the way to go! They are essentially a hop tea. Water infused with hops so you get those familiar flavours without any sugar or fermentation.

The pouring of it is odd, smells like beer, looks like water. Wilde Guru is another great example of a hop water. Really light but you get those lovely bitter and fruity characteristics from the hops. There are definitely some lovely citrus elements to the flavour.

Lovely, light and refreshing. Just bring on summer!

Carlton Zero 6/10

Category:

Description

I gave this one a bit of a bad wrap initially because per bottle it’s pretty high carb. I realise not everyone worries about such things, and if you’re getting into the beers it’s probably not at the forefront of your mind. This beer is fine.

Actually tastes nicer than real Carlton Draught. It’s one that pubs have gotten on board with stocking so that is a plus too. I think it has a slightly funny aftertaste, I do prefer the Heineken.

Parc Non-Alcoholic Pilsner 8/10

Category:

Description

From the team at Monceau (killer Pét Nat Kombucha) we have an exciting Melbourne made Pilsner!

I am excited from the get go because this one is low cal, carbs & sugar which is always a win for me. In terms of beer though this can mean a rather thin and watery finish. But I feel like luckily, that’s not the case with Parc. Now I couldn’t tell you what a pilsner is supposed to taste like (sorry!) but to me this is more reminiscent of the largers I used to down like my life depended on it; light, crisp and incredibly smashable. There’s a light citrus element and a hoppy bitter finish.

I initially thought it was a little thin in the finish, and maybe it is, but also maybe I have just become accustomed to the big mouth feel of some of the craft beers (never thought I’d see the day!)

Very easy drinking and satisfying, paired perfectly with a little bowl of salted nuts. I think these will be a fridge staple over summer!
